Deputy Ric Hottenstein and Riggs visited a recent Optimist Club meeting. Riggs, a Belgium Malinois, is a member of the Grant County Sheriff's Canine Unit. Deputy Hottenstein became Riggs handler in 2016 when Riggs was only 14 months old. Riggs is trained in drug detection. He is also trained for tracking, evidence locating, area searches, building searches, and to assist with high risk stops. Ric explained that Riggs is trained to protect his handler and how Riggs often helps de-escalate situations.
